A Polynomial Time Algorithm for Parsing with the Bounded Order Lambek Calculus
نویسنده
چکیده
Fowler (2008) introduced the bounded-order Lambek Calculus and provided a polynomial time algorithm for its sequent derivability. However, this result is limited because it requires exponential time in the presence of lexical ambiguity. That is, Fowler (2008) did not provide a polynomial time parsing algorithm. The purpose of this paper will be to provide such an algorithm. We will prove an asymptotic bound of O(n) for parsing and improve the bound for sequent derivability from O(n) to O(n).

A Polynomial-Time Algorithm for the Lambek Calculus with Brackets of Bounded Order
Lambek calculus is a logical foundation of categorial grammar, a linguistic paradigm of grammar as logic and parsing as deduction. Pentus (2010) gave a polynomial-time algorithm for determining provability of bounded depth formulas in L∗, the Lambek calculus with empty antecedents allowed. Pentus’ algorithm is based on tabularisation of proof nets. Lambek calculus with brackets is a conservativ...
متن کاملEfficient Parsing with the Product-Free Lambek Calculus
This paper provides a parsing algorithm for the Lambek calculus which is polynomial time for a more general fragment of the Lambek calculus than any previously known algorithm. The algorithm runs in worst-case time O(n5) when restricted to a certain fragment of the Lambek calculus which is motivated by empirical analysis. In addition, a set of parameterized inputs are given, showing why the alg...

متن کاملEliminating the unit constant in the Lambek calculus with brackets
We present a translation of the Lambek calculus with brackets and the unit constant, Lb∗1, into the Lambek calculus with brackets allowing empty antecedents, but without the unit constant, Lb∗. Using this translation, we extend previously known results for Lb∗ to Lb∗1: (1) languages generated by categorial grammars based on the Lambek calculus with brackets are context-free (Kanazawa 2017); (2)...
متن کاملLambek Grammars, Tree Adjoining Grammars and Hyperedge Replacement Grammars
Two recent extension of the nonassociative Lambek calculus, the LambekGrishin calculus and the multimodal Lambek calculus, are shown to generate class of languages as tree adjoining grammars, using (tree generating) hyperedge replacement grammars as an intermediate step. As a consequence both extensions are mildly context-sensitive formalisms and benefit from polynomial parsing algorithms.
